San Francisco Idea House now open

San Francisco Idea House now openSunset Idea Houses‘ program began in 1998, creating solar-powered, green-roofed, eco-friendly architectures in the West’s rural regions, where there’s space for new constructions and substantial sized energy systems.

Livable and contemporary without being minimal, the SF Idea House is unique in that it’s the first Sunset Idea Project to rise in an urban setting and proves you don’t have to live in the wild, wild West to enjoy the benefits of eco-friendly design. Sunset has shown that eco-savvy design is just as suitable in urban lands and as it is in suburban neighborhoods.
What makes the home truly groundbreaking are the cutting-edge technology eco-features it incorporates, some of them still in experimental stages: photovoltaic electrical generation, a wind turbine, gray-water system, energy-saving lighting, “smart” computer-controlled house system, living roofs, ecological materials, and more, yielding a self-sustaining house with zero-net energy usage.

The Sunset home will be used as a demonstration residential energy project for the City of San Francisco’s Department of the Environment, as well as an exemplary home for the Pacific Coast Building Conference 2008. It will be opened from November 30, 2007 through January 27, 2008 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9am-4pm.
Located at 3029 25th St, San Francisco, CA 94110 (USA)

Did you park in a bike lane?

I Parked In A Bike LaneIn many big cities all over the world bike lanes seem to be the designated parking spaces for delivery trucks, SUV ladies running into shops, or just about anyone who is in a hurry.
Parking in, double parking in, or otherwise blocking a designated bicycle passageway forces cyclists to ride into the street, possibly blocking traffic and placing the cyclist in harm’s way.

There is a new organization to fight this: in NYcity there are stickers that state “I parked in a bike lane” on cars that are blocking the lanes.

“I Parked In A Bike Lane.org is a humble movement aimed at raising driver awareness towards the problems associated with blocking bike lanes. Cyclists know how unsafe this can be, but something about being hulled up inside two tons of steel seems to lead to an obliviousness (or perhaps indifference) to these issues.”
Great idea guys.
