Legendary Japanese make-up extraordinaire Shu UemuraSadly, legendary Japanese make-up maestro Shu Uemura, died at the age of 79 in Tokyo, Dec 29. The news of his death was released only this week.

His Zen-like approach to beauty is what, we believe, made him unique in the international panorama of make-up artists.
Mr. Uemura believed that “beautiful skin is essential for beautiful make-up”. To him, beautiful skin was the necessary canvas for make-up; and the secret to beautiful skin started with purifying, thorough cleansing. That’s why his cleansing oils are central to the brand’s unique concept of beauty.

Shu Uemura opened a Hollywood-style make-up studio in Tokyo in 1965, and two years later introduced to Japan cleansing oil to wash away make-up. His “magic oil” quickly became popular among Hollywood stars and it still remains popular even today.

L’Oreal, the actual owner of the Shu Uemura brand, will hold a commemoration ceremony on Jan 31 in Tokyo.
